Cameroonian Franck Mbella has narrated his ordeal after coach Rigobert Song dropped him from his squad for their June 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.
The 20-year-old Asante Kotoko forward was named in the Indomitable Lions’ provisional squad for the two qualifying games but did not make the final squad.
He said not making the final squad, which would have meant making his senior debut for his country, made him lose focus.
He, however, credits coach Prosper Narteh and Kotoko Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah for helping him recover his good form for the Porcupine Warriors.
“When [Cameroon] first called, I was happy and proud because it was a sign that they’d seen my hard work,” he told Opemsuo Radio in an interview.
“When my name was omitted [from the final list], I lost focus.
“But the coach and the CEO helped me a lot by consoling me and telling me to believe in myself.”
Mbella’s form has seen him score 21 goals in the Ghana Premier League this season, making him the top scorer in the league, with two games to go.
He admits he has set his sights on the golden boot and is confident of sealing the award.
“I want to win the goal king [award], I am very determined for it and hopefully on Sunday I will score,” he added.
