2022 WCQ: Mediocre Black Stars punished in South Africa

Maritzburg United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane struck late at the FNB Stadium to pick an important win for South Africa against Ghana in their second Group G game of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars were once again awful for the majority of the game after a good start that saw them dominate the Bafana Bafana early on.

The win means South Africa tops Group G with 4 points after drawing against Zimbabwe in their first game.

Ghana drops to second with 3 points in the interim as Ethiopia hosts Zimbabwe in the other group game on Tuesday.

The first 10 minutes of the game was a battle in the middle of the pitch, but Ghana was the most offensive in that spell, starting the game in better shape than in their previous game.

The Bafana Bafana started to stamp their authority in the game from the 17th minute and began getting one-on-one duels on the flanks.

Debutant Fatawu Mohammed and Gideon Mensah were also up to the task and keeping Tau and Hlongwane at bay.

Teboho Mokoena went the closest South Africa came in the game with his well-hit free-kick on the half-hour mark that bounced awkwardly before Richard Ofori spilled it and punched it to safety.

Tau headed into the back of the net seven minutes later from an offside position from a good delivery from the right flank.

Evidence Makgopa scooped the ball out of Ghana’s net just closer to the goal line a minute into the second-half after Ofori allowed Mokoena’s right-hand delivery to pass through his legs.

Mothobi Mvala tried a spectacular in the 67th minute after being teed up inside the box. Tau combined well with a teammate and lift it for him.

Richard Ofori went off with an injury 13 minutes to the 90 and was replaced by Lawrence Ati-Zigi in post.

Hlongwane had the easiest task of guiding the ball into Ghana’s net with 7 minutes to the end of the game after a messy defensive play from the Black Stars.

It means Hugo Broos’ side is in a good position after the September round of games in the road to Qatar 2022 campaign.
